Are computer games good for my brain?

July 27, 2009 – 9:00 pm

Somebody said that playing computer games makes our brains work fast , it’s that right ?

I’d say yes, depending on what games you play.
for example, mindless shooting is not going to do you much good ( though even that may improve your response times slightly).
But strategy or simulation games, and especially complex puzzle games, challenge you to think in different ways and are good for your reasoning and logic skills.
There is also the benefit provided by an immersive game that tells an excellent story - I’d count it as equivalent to the sort of experience you get from reading a really good book ,and I am someone who loves books.

  2. no, they turn your brain to mush.

On a good note, you can then cook your brain and make a very tasty soup out of it.

  4. Just remember, online games are cool as long as there are guns, planes,or lightsabers.
When you get into the online games with orcs, swords, and "PvP" zones, then you are a loser.

  5. Yes, you can develop problem solving skills and manual dexterity though video games.

With that said, the same time could be spent doing something that’s more productive, like reading or studying.

  8. Certain computer games can help your brain. In some adventure games, they’d make you think about a solution to get out of a situation. Also, in some sports games, it helps timing, hand and eye coordination, In shooting games, it also helps with hand to eye coordination, as well as awareness of an area.

  9. Everything can be good for you in moderation. (except Trans/Saturated fat of course) So keep your gaming in moderation and it can be good for your brain. Too much gaming, however, will screw you over.

  11. There are the bad games. Which literally make you dumber, because your mind is occupied with useless information (i.e. Leather Skins sell for 569 Points), while real information, such as algebraic information is slowly lost.

There are the good games too. Games like Super Monkey Ball (No. I do not play this…) is used by doctors to increase hand-eye coordination. The Wii was said to be a great game system, due to the constant need to use your senses. Strategy games will challenge your IQ, but do no good.

All games will do something good and bad. Whether it be destroying your intellect, or helping your hand-eye coordination. It all comes down to the game.
