Brain control-Monkey

April 16, 2009 – 7:54 am

In a ground-breaking 5 year experiment, scientists hook up a robotic arm controlled by a computer game to a monkey’s brain. In training the monkey to move the arm by ‘playing’ the game with a joystick. Researchers wanted to learn more about the output of the brain and the individual brain-cell signals. However the monkey was about to do something that would make history and change the lives of those involved. The clip is taken from a fascinating BBC Horizon show called Human2.0. …

  3. haha…and let …
haha…and let alone having steaks, millions of smaller animals like rabbits and squirrels are killed from harvesters, that’s right, harvesters that collect the crops vegetarians/vegans rely their lives on. and a study actually showed that if everyone ate meat, less animals would die from human cause, unless you think squirrels and rabbits are not as worthy as cows therefore it will be okay for them to die. (search “OSU scientist questions the moral basis of a vegan diet” on google for source)

  4. kick , i would …
kick , i would love to just have my brain in a big robot/mech so i would be able to controll it. but like another guy said this could be used to controll people , if they figure out what brain impule sequence does what then they could just get a chip to fire them back and thats that.

  5. yes truely …
yes truely marvelous and definatly benefits. but when coubled with that mindgate chip this technology could allow AI to use you/us as the robots and we would be the mind controlled slaves. I like the research and the possibilites but im cautious of the outcome

  6. this is not about …
this is not about video games and prosthetic limbs. this kind of technology will, in the distant future, have myriad applications. we are ringing in the next social revolution– agricultural, industrial, technological… and now biotechnological. or whatever we decide to call it. and all we can say is “that poor monkey”!? our collective preoccupation with trivial matters of which we have no control atrophies our ability to look ahead; to make sound decisions based on providence. OPEN YOUR EYES

ah. so for you the aim or purpose is not the issue its the length of time involved ?

your brain should be probed next . its not on a “completely different level”. a few cells maybe

Perhaps because slaughtering a cow and experimenting on the brain of a living animal for 5 years are on completely different levels? Use your ing brain you hippie .

  9. “Our intuitions …
“Our intuitions about the consciousness of other animals are driven by a variety of
factors, many of which probably have no bearing upon whether or not they are conscious. creatures that lack facial expressiveness or faces at all are more difficult to include within the circle of our moral concern. until we more fully understand the relationship between brains and minds, our judgments about the possible scope of animal suffering will remain relatively
    blind and relatively dogmatic “

  10. Cute and fuzzy… …
Cute and fuzzy… Thats exactly it. I think if you don’t see animals being killed you tend not to care, but if you have to kill the cow yourself everytimeyou eat a cheeseburger,… well thats something else. People would probably convert to just eating what grows on trees.

  11. you f***ing …
    you f***ing hypocritical dim wits.
every time you have a steak ,any meat at all. you are perpetuating an industry that is environmentally disastrous and the height of cruelty.therefore your comments are pointless. 10 billion land animals are raised and killed for meat, eggs, and milk each yr in the US alone.why would you suddenly feel compassion for a this primate ?
    its cute and fuzzy ?

robotic/cyborg suits are on the drawntable. Prepare to wear one before you die. Freaky , we can’t adapt to our new generations. Science goes faster and faster, and I am looking forward to it I admit. Sad they have to over an animal again though.

  16. And I suppose that …
And I suppose that you refuse all medical interventions onto you and your love ones, on the basis that they were tested first on animals? So, no immunizations, no drugs of any sort, no surgeries, etc. Is that your point? I would suggest that instead of taking issue with my statement, which I made in reference to your comments made with no evidence to support them, that you find an educated balance. I am not at all pro-cruelty to animals, and I am sickened by what has happened and continues.

  17. Oh please osprey, …
Oh please osprey, the monkey is forced into the apparatus, arms secured. I highly doubt the monkey does this willingly.

There’s no glory in animal testing.

This is a very benign example in this footage, at best. Not to mention this creature probably has years left and will undergo experimentation the entire time, up until death.

The primate I sponsored is 21 yeas old, @ univ of Minn being tested on to determine “effects of alcohol and cocaine.”

    Ridiculous.

  23. They’ll keep going …
They’ll keep going further, and further, and further…..only to get nowhere in the end. The monkey is FORCED to do this. Nothing about this is natural or scientific when some part of the “experiment” is forced.

They didn’t show the monkey because it is being abused, of course.

It’s a cool idea, but bogus at the same time.
